When Dowry Prohibition Day is celebrated?
Dowry Prohibition Day is celebrated on 26th November. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the social issue of dowry and the legal measures in place to combat it.
2. What is Dowry?
In simple words, Dowry is a practice of demanding money or gifts by either of the parties (Bride’s family / Groom’s family) as a condition of fixing the marriage.
- The dowry is taken generally in the form of cash, jewellery, house / land property, electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, utensils, vehicles and other household items that help the newlyweds set up their home.
- Dowry could be taken either directly or indirectly at or before or even after the marriage at multiple occasions.
- Most of the times, the dowry is demanded by the groom’s family.
- Dowry system is not limited to any specific religion. It is common among all levels of the society – be it poor, middle class or the rich. In fact, Upper-class families are more likely to engage in the dowry system than the lower class.
3. What are the causes of taking / giving a dowry?
- In many places, son gets all / most of the property by inheritance. This leaves daughters financially dependent upon their husbands and in-laws.
- Most of the parents prefer distributing their property to a daughter at her marriage itself as a dowry, rather than keeping anything for her post their death.
4. What are the effects of dowry system?
Dowry is a social evil in the society.
- The dowry system can put great financial burden on the bride’s family
- Dowry system, leads to a girl being far more expensive to raise than a boy. As a result, females are seen as financial burdens
- Boys are treated as an asset whereas, girls are treated as a liability. They are often subjected to subjugation and are given second hand treatment in education and other amenities
- In some cases, the dowry system leads to unimaginable tortures and crimes towards women, ranging from fraud, emotional abuse, domestic violence and injury to even deaths (bride’s suicide or killing).
- Most dowry deaths occur when the young woman, unable to bear the harassment and torture, commits suicide by hanging herself or consuming poison. Or, she is doused in kerosene and set ablaze by the husband or his family (Bride Burning).
5. What is the punishment for demanding a dowry?
In India, as per the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961:
- The practice of giving or taking of dowry by either of the parties to a marriage is prohibited.
- Demanding and advertising dowry is a punishable offence.
- More serious crimes in relation to dowry such as dowry death and cruelty from dowry demands are punishable under the general law on crimes
