FAQs: Child / Early Marriage Causes, Effects & Solutions
Child marriage, a deeply ingrained social issue, remains a global concern with severe consequences for children, especially girls. Occurring in various forms across cultures, early or child marriage involves the union of minors, often against their will, before they reach the legal age of consent.
This practice perpetuates gender inequality, robs children of their childhood, and exposes them to numerous physical, emotional, and psychological risks. Efforts to combat child marriage focus on raising awareness, enforcing legal age limits, and promoting education and gender equality to break this cycle of harm and protect children’s rights. Let’s have a look at the detailed information on such marriages.
What is child marriage?
In simple words, Child marriage is a formal marriage or an informal union in which one or both spouses are under 18 years old. Such marriages are a violation of children’s human rights.
Which country has the highest rate of child marriages?
Child marriages are commonly practiced in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Many parts of Africa, India (Bharat), Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Laos, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Mexico etc. have higher cases of Child Marriages.
Niger (a landlocked country in West Africa) has the highest overall prevalence of child marriage in the world. However, Bangladesh has the highest rate of marriage involving girls under age 15.
The largest number of child brides live in South Asia. It is home to almost half (42%) of all child brides worldwide. India alone accounts for one third of the global total.

What are the primary causes of child marriage?
Child marriage is most common in rural areas. Let’s have a look at some of the root causes of Child Marriage.
1. Gender inequality
It’s really sad to see that in many countries, girls are considered inferior to men and treated as commodities. They have less access to education and low social, political and economic status.
As a result, many girls are married to much older men at a very young age.
2. Poverty
In every region, the poor are most at risk of child marriage. Poor families consider girls as a financial burden. For them, marrying off their girl child is a way to reduce family costs and gain financial security.
- Their marriage may be used to repay debts, manage disputes, or settle social, economic and political alliances
- A dowry or ‘bride price’ may provide a welcome income for a girl’s family in times of economic hardship.
- If the girl’s family has to pay a dowry, it is generally higher for older girls or women. The amount may be less if she is young and uneducated.
3. Social norms and practices
- Younger wives are considered to be more obedient.
- In some of the regions, child marriages are practiced since many generations. Hence, people don’t consider such marriages as a social evil or a global issue.
- Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a root cause of child marriage, but this is not highlighted enough. The practice involves removing the outer layers of female genitals and sometimes the clitoris. Once a girl is cut, she is considered a woman and therefore ready for marriage. Such Girls are made to “rest” for a month and are then married within two years as waiting longer is considered bad luck.
4. Social stigma and insecurity
- In many places, girls who have relationships or become pregnant outside of marriage are shamed for bringing dishonour on their family.
- In such circumstances, parents may see early marriage as a way to protect their daughters and their families.
- Girls may even be forced to marry rapists to spare their families the stigma associated with unmarried pregnancy.
5. War and conflict
- Child marriage is used as a weapon of war and to hide human trafficking and sexual abuse.
- Girls may marry or enter informal unions with older men who promise to reunite them with family members who have already migrated or been displaced.
- Parents, especially in humanitarian crises – often view marriage as a way to protect their daughters from sexual violence
Child marriage rates have been known to increase during the chaos of war, as families endure both economic instability and fear of violence. Yet child marriage itself leads to girls experiencing high levels of sexual, physical and emotional violence from their intimate partners.
6. Ineffective laws
Laws protecting girls do exist, but they are not effectively implemented. Most of the times, they remain only on the paper due to various constraints and loopholes.
7. Voluntary decision
Surprisingly, not all child marriages are forced marriages.
There are many instances in which adolescents decide to marry their partner, whether a peer or an older individual voluntarily.
But why would anyone love too get married at such a young age? Well, these marriages may be a way to exercise independence, leave home or escape difficult circumstances, including desperate poverty or family violence.
What are the effects of child marriage?
There are so many negative impacts of Child Marriage on the overall Health and Development of the society.
- Child marriage is a fundamental violation of human rights. Child marriage robs girls of their childhood and deny girls their right to make vital decisions about their sexual health and well-being.
- Girls who marry before 18 are more likely to experience domestic violence and abuse
- When a girl gets married, she is often expected to drop out of school to look after the home, children and other family members
- Due to lack of education, girls often have low confidence and fail to stand on their own feet. As a result, remain financially dependent on their spouse & family members all their lives. They get trapped in a cycle of poverty.
- Child brides often become pregnant during adolescence. This can lead to complications during pregnancy, birth defects and even death.
- Child brides are neither physically nor emotionally ready to become wives and mothers at such a young age. Unfortunately, such girls end up having many children to care for while still young.
- Child brides are often unable to negotiate safer sexual practices. As a result, they are at a higher risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections
- Child brides often show signs symptomatic of sexual abuse and post-traumatic stress. This includes the feelings such as hopelessness, helplessness and severe depression.
- The overall impact on a girl’s health, future and family imposes substantial economic costs and affects the development and prosperity of the entire nation.
Is child marriage legal?
Child marriage is almost universally banned. Governments around the world have overwhelmingly, and independently, decided that child marriage is a grave violation of human rights.
Still, there are some countries that permit exceptions with parental consent or under religious or customary law.
Even in places where child marriage is clearly legally prohibited, enforcement can be complicated by the fact that many child marriages – and many marriages in general – are not legally registered.
What is the punishment for child marriage?
Different countries have different laws related to child marriage.
In India, as per The Child Marriage Restrain Act, 1929…
Whoever performs, conducts or directs any child marriage shall be punished with simple imprisonment which may extend to three months and shall also be liable to fine, unless he proves that he had reasons to believe that the marriage was not a child marriage.
