    FAQs

Why do we observe World Rabies Day?

World Rabies Day is celebrated every year on 28th September to raise awareness about the cause, prevention and treatment of the deadly rabies.

World Rabies Day also marks the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, a French chemist, and microbiologist who developed the first rabies vaccine.

    What is Rabies?

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, fatal viral disease that attacks the central nervous system.

    What causes Rabies?

Rabies can be caused by a deep bite or scratch from an infected animal such as dog, raccoon or a bat. Dogs account of 99% of transmission. It is found only in mammals.

The disease is spread through the saliva of the infected mammal.

In India, Rabies is mainly occurred because of the non-vaccinated stray dogs, while in some other nations this can be mainly caused by bats so far.

    Can you survive Rabies?

Rabies has the highest (99.9%) mortality rate than any other disease on earth. It mainly causes inflammation to the brain and ultimately death of the patient.

Fortunately, you won’t die immediately after the dog bites you. Rabies is preventable even after a bite if the vaccinations are administered on the stipulated schedule. But if it is not treated before symptoms appear, it becomes incurable and deadly.

How long does it take to show signs of Rabies in humans?

The problem with Rabies is that it doesn’t show any symptoms immediately but gradually takes a very risky turn.

Rabies can lay dormant in your body for 1 to 3 months. This period is called as ‘incubation period.’ The first symptoms of rabies can appear once the virus travels through your central nervous system and hits your brain.

This can happen in a range of few days to more than a year after the bite happens.

What are the symptoms of Rabies in humans?

The first signs of rabies are…

    1. Tingling, prickling, or itching feeling around the bite area
    2. Flu-like symptoms such as a fever, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, nausea, and weakness.

As the virus spreads through central nervous system, more severe symptoms are visible depending upon the type of the rabies

There are two forms of the disease:

    a) Furious rabies

In this type of rabies, a person may develop…

    1. Signs of hyperactivity, confusion, anxiety
    2. Violent behaviour
    3. Inability to sleep (insomnia) and nightmares
    4. Salivating more than usual
    5. Difficulty swallowing
    6. Fear of water (hydrophobia)
    7. Fear of light (photophobia)
    8. Sometimes fear of drafts or of fresh air (aerophobia)
    9. Hallucinations
    10. And eventually dies due to heart or lung failure

    b) Paralytic rabies

Paralytic rabies runs a less dramatic and usually longer course than the furious form.

    In this type of rabies,

    1. Muscles gradually become paralysed, starting at the site of the bite or scratch.
    2. A coma slowly develops
    3. and eventually leads to death

How long does it take for a dog to show signs of Rabies?

The incubation period or simply the time until clinical signs appear can typically vary from few weeks to 1 year, depending upon factors such as the location of virus entry and viral load

What are the symptoms of Rabies in dogs?

The primary signs of rabies in dogs include…

    1. Fever
    2. Difficulty swallowing
    3. Excessive drooling
    4. Seizures and aggressive behaviour
    5. Negative effect of lights, movement, and sound
    6. Paralysis
    7. And ultimately death occurs

What is National Dog Bite Prevention Week?

National Dog Bite Prevention Week is observed during the second full week of April each year, to   educate people about preventing dog bites.

    Why do dogs bite?

Dogs bite for a variety of reasons,

    1. Defending themselves or their territory in a stressful situation
    2. Protecting themselves if they are scared, have been startled, or feel threatened.
    3. Protecting something that is valuable to them, like their puppies, food or a toy etc.
    4. Nipping and biting accidently during play
    5. Dogs may even bite if they aren’t feeling well due to an injury or illness and might want to be left alone.

The cases of dog bite increased significantly during corona pandemic as the dogs were dealing with owner stress and more people around the house throughout the day.

How to prevent dog bite and ultimately Rabies?

Once each and every individual is aware about the severity of Rabies disease, it’s Cause, Prevention and Precaution, we will lead towards a Rabies-free world.

    1. Be a responsible pet owner

    1. Carefully select the dog that’s right for your family and suits your lifestyle.
    2. Get your pet vaccinated on time. Vaccinating dogs is the most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people
    3. Use a leash in public to make sure that you are able to control your dog.
    4. Pay attention to your dog’s body language to understand its various moods
    5. Take your dog to the veterinarian for a routine check-up to ensure your dog’s physical and behavioural health.
    6. If your dog is not very social, avoid taking it to the crowded places

    2. Teach your kids proper distance and manners to play with pets
    3. Do not play aggressive games with a dog, such as tug-of-war or wrestling. These types of activities can make a dog overly excited, which may lead to a nip or a bite
    4. Never bother a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. Dogs in these situations are more likely to respond aggressively, even with a person who is familiar to them.

    3. Socialize your dog

    1. Socialize your pet dog by introducing him to people and other animals while it’s still a puppy. This way, it will help your dog feel more comfortable in different situations as it gets older.

    4. Avoid risky situations

    4. Looking sick or injured
    5. Resting with her puppies
    6. Looks anxious about your presence
    7. Playing with a toy
    8. Growling or barking
    9. or if the dog owner does not give permission to pet the dog
    10. If a dog is behaving in a threatening manner like growling and barking…
      Just remain calm
Avoid eye contact with the dog
    11. Back away slowly until the dog loses interest and leaves.
    12. If a dog tries to attack you, protect your eyes and face with arms and fists.
    13. If you see an animal acting strangely, shows aggressive behaviour or tries to bite you without any reason, call your local animal control.
    14. Never touch a wild animal, even if it looks dead
